Frequently Asked Questions

What is the health policy of Catrix Maine coon cattery?

All our cats are HCM/PKD/FIV/FELV tested and only come in contact with animals of our cattery.

HCM (Hypertrofische Cardio Myopathie)

In Hypertrophic Cardio Myopathy we see a strong thickened wall of the left ventricle of the heart and also of the wall between two rooms. As a result, the wall of the left ventricle are always "stiff" so that they are not sufficient to fill. The volume is getting smaller and with the result that less blood is circulated and the space in the enlarged left atrium. This is the chance of blood clots in the dilated left ventricle into the aorta which then can come and thrombosis in the arteries of the legs cause. The result is cold hind feet, or even paralysis, and by the pressure rise in the L.boezem increasing again, the pressure in the pulmonary vasculature which in turn leads to increased accumulation of fluid in the lungs. The cardiac function will only decline and eventually the animal will die.

PKD (Polycistic Kidney Disease)

Cats with PKD have multiple cysts in both kidneys (ie, fluid-filled cavities). Both the number of cysts and the size of the cysts grow and oppress the healthy tissue causing renal function deteriorated and eventually there arises chronic renal failure. PKD is caused by an error in the DNA (a protein that is important for proper kidney function) has been wrong applied. It is a dangerous disease and which only reveals itself after several years.

FIV (Feline Immunodeficientie Virus)

Also called AIDS. FIV is caused by a virus that is related to the HIV virus that causes AIDS in humans. This virus is a contagious virus. It may only infect cats and not humans.

FELV (Feline Leukemie Virus of Leucose)

The virus can cause leukemia (cancer of white blood cells), but this is not the disease that occurs infection . It affects the immune system of the cat (immunosuppression) making them more susceptible to infections. FELV is a viral disease with a fatal outcome.
